Million Dollar Kid  (1944)

The gang is befriended by a millionaire whom they save from a mugging. However, they begin to suspect that the man's son was actually one of the muggers. Knowing that the boy's father is still grieving for an older son he lost during the war, and would be devastated if he learned his only remaining son was a criminal, the gang sets out to reform the boy. The East Side Kids, now sans Sunshine Sammy Morrison and Bobby Jordan but with Huntz Hall and Billy Benedict, rescue a rich passerby (Herbert Heyes, later to play Mr. Gimble in Miracle on 34th Street) from a mugger. The grateful tycoon invites the boys over to his pad, where a fully equipped gymnasium awaits them. There are subplots involving Heyes ne'e'r do well son (Johnny Duncan, a few years before playing Robin in the Columbia serial Batman and Robin )and his feisty daughter (Louise Currie). The otherwise unknown Al Stone delivers an amusing one-off performance as cousin Herbie, an erstwhile East Side Kid whose relationship with Muggs and Glimpy is somewhat convoluted. One of the wittier series entries.

The New Adventures of Tarzan

Not many realize this feature, along with 'Tarzan and the Green Goddess', were produced by E.R. Burroughs, himself. He wanted a screen portrayal of Tarzan as he had written him, a noble intelligent Ape Man,Lord Greystoke, not as Hollywood had made him. And no Cheetah.

Olympic-winning athlete Herman Brix ,later known as Bruce Bennet, makes the transition from refined English Lord to savage Lord of the Jungle very convincingly. Both New Adventures and Green Goddess were actually filmed in Guatemala as a theatrical multi-part serial for Saturday matinees, later to be made into two features.

Enjoy an intelligent and exciting portrayal of Tarzan as Burroughs wanted him to be seen.

Tarzan's Revenge (1938)

Eleanor and her parents are hunting big game, acompanied by her wimpish fiance. Ben lleu Bey wants to add her to his 100-woman harem. Tarzan wants her too.  This low-key Tarzan feature relies more on the settings and the general situation than it does on the story, which is rather sketchy. It was Glenn Morris's only appearance as Tarzan, and while he certainly looks athletic enough, his lack of acting experience really shows. Some of the other aspects of the movie help out just enough to make it watchable.

The story has an expedition heading to Africa to capture some zoo specimens, with Tarzan indicating a strong preference for allowing his animal friends to stay in the wild. Meanwhile, a lecherous sultan has spotted a young woman in the expedition, and would like to add her to his harem, so he has made plans accordingly. Most of the screen time, though, does not advance the story, instead focusing on a variety of vignettes, and adding a lot of footage of lions, elephants, and many other animals, including a couple of cute lion cubs.

chaney.jpg (11198 bytes)The Indestructible Man  with Lon Chaney

Lon Chaney Jr. except for the opening sequence has no dialogue and yet he carries the film as only he can with just mannerisms and facial features and a minimal amount of make-up towards the end as well as doing his own stunts. This is his picture and he's in total control.

Subject: Great, but for different reasons than when I was a kid

When I was 6 years old, this movie thrilled me. Now, it's still very entertaining - not as the overwhelming epic it seemed way back when, but as a great example of the wise use of a microscopic budget. The dated pacing, dialogue, and narration add to the enjoyment.

The Three Stooges - "Color Craziness"
"The New Three Stooges" was produced in 1965. It featured the animated adventures of Moe, Larry, & Curly Joe. The cartoons were introduced by live-action inserts with the real Stooges. These inserts were some of the only Stooges material ever filmed in color, and they also feature long-time Stooge collaberator Emil Sitka. "The Three Stooges - Color Craziness" is an hour feature comprised of these rare color Stooge comedy bits...
